Olivia Munn was born in Oklahoma but spent the majority of her childhood in Tokyo, Japan. Her journey into American television started with a co-hosting gig on Attack of the Show, followed by appearances on The Daily Show and The Newsroom, where she grew in popularity.

Early Life/Family/Parents/Education 

Lisa Olivia Munn was brought up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on July 3, 1980, to a U.S father and a Vietnamese-born Chinese mother. Her mom, Kim, remarried when Munn was just two years old to an American Air Force man, who later took the family to Tokyo, Japan.

Munn had a rocky connection with her stepfather and felt like an outsider in her new place throughout those crucial years. However, she found solace in viewing video clips of popular American shows and movies, and her exotic appearance helped her gain some success in the Tokyo modeling market.

Munn felt isolated in her high school when she relocated to Oklahoma at the age of 16, but she soon found a home among the video game and tech folks who would undoubtedly make up her Attack of the Show audience. She went on to study journalism at the University of Oklahoma, with minors in Japanese and dramatic arts.

Munn spent a year on the assignments desk of KJRH-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after her mother quashed her aspirations to pursue performing after college. She pursued a career as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports Net, covering college football and women’s basketball events, but she struggled to fit in.

Munn debuted in Hollywood as a novice in films such as Scarecrow Gone Wild (2004) and The Road to Canyon Lake (2005).  Big Stan (2007), directed by Rob Schneider, and The Slammin’ Salmon (2009), directed by the Broken Lizard comedy team, both provided opportunities to work alongside actual industry talent. Munn then had minor appearances in larger films such as Date Night and Iron Man 2 before landing a secondary role in Sarah Jessica Parker’s movie, I Don’t Know How She Does It in 2011.
