Jussie Smollett was born on June 21, 1982, in Santa Rosa (Soma County), California, to Janet and Joel Smollett. His mother is Afro-American and his father is Ashkenazi Jewish.
Jake, Jojo, Jocqui, Jazz, and Jurnee are his siblings. His siblings all went on to be actresses. In Paramus, New Jersey, he graduated from ‘Paramus Catholic High School.’ When Smollett was 19 years old, he told his parents that he was gay.

Jussie Smollett began acting at a very young age. One of his earliest appearances was in Emilio Estevez and Joshua Jackson’s popular children’s hockey film, The Mighty Ducks, released in 1992. Working on the film “was a terrific experience,” he subsequently told People magazine. Smollett then played the title character’s son in the 1993 TV miniseries Queen, based on an Alex Haley novel (Halle Berry). Smollett featured in the sitcom ‘On Our Own’ with his real-life brothers and sisters in 1994.

Smollett claimed in January 2019 that he was assaulted in downtown Chicago by two individuals who spilt a chemical substance on him, tied him up, and made homophobic remarks. By mid-February, authorities had dismissed two brothers who had been linked to the incident, and they were looking into the possibility that the actor had orchestrated the attack. Smollett was charged with a class 4 felony for submitting a false report on February 20, following the convening of a grand jury to hear evidence. The following morning, Smollett was detained and bailed after paying a $10,000 bond and submitting his passport.
A Cook County grand jury filed a 16-count indictment against Smollett on March 7, alleging that he made false statements during two rounds of police interviews. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said on March 26 that all charges against Smollett had been dropped, citing Smollett’s community service and commitment to forfeit the $10,000 bond as key factors. Smollett was slammed with a $130,000 lawsuit by the City of Chicago in April to cover the expense of investigating a bogus hate crime report, and the case is still ongoing. A Cook County judge ordered the criminal case file against Smollett to be disclosed the following month. The judge remarked that, despite Smollett’s wish to keep the information private, he was not keeping things hidden.
After another grand jury handed a six-count indictment against Smollett for creating fake police reports, Webb stated in February 2020 that he would pursue the actor further. Smollett was found guilty on five counts of disorderly behaviour by a jury on December 9, 2021; he was acquitted on the sixth count. In March 2022, Smollett was jailed to 150 days in prison and had to pay over $120,000 in reparation as well as a $25,000 fine for filing false police reports.
